Food Truck Night

Exploring Dallas, Uncategorized

I’ll let you in on a secret, I hate public events. When it comes to being anti-social, I’m the president of the club. However, I told myself in September, that for the rest of the year I would go to any event I wanted to, within reason, and that I wouldn’t talk myself out of it. So last night, the boyfriend and I went to a smaller local event hosted by the Indian Creek/Carrollton HOA and I had a really great time. I think the best way for me to keep my promise to myself is to ease into it with these smaller local events. I found this one on Facebook and made sure to send it to my boyfriend because if he saw and wanted to go, there wasn’t any way I wasn’t going.

So we went, and I’m glad we did. The food was amazing, the live music was awesome too and it was just a nice event. I’m glad there wasn’t an overwhelming amount of food trucks to choose from and I was really happy that weren’t too many people there. My favorite food truck there, and I really would’ve spent all my money on their food, was Cousins Maine Lobster. I went to college in Rhode Island so I became accustomed to having access to succulent lobster all the time but since I’ve graduated and moved around, I hadn’t had that luxury in quite some time. Cousins has a lot of options for you to indulge your love of lobster but I went classic and got the Connecticut Roll. It did not disappoint. There were HUGE chunks of lobster meat and claw meat (my favorite) and was served warm with some butter and a squeeze of lemon. I was in heaven. I hadn’t had a legit lobster roll like this since I had been back on the East Coast so I was a very happy camper and I honestly wish I had gotten one more before I left!

Besides incredible lobster rolls, Kidwell’s BBQ was in attendance and after trying their food, I’m really sad they don’t have a brick and mortar restaurant. Since I moved to Texas, I’ve been struggling to find a good barbeque place. Which seems ironic since Texas is supposed to have some of the best but I haven’t really been impressed yet … until last night. Kidwell’s totally restored my faith in Texas barbeque. I got their pulled pork sandwich and my boyfriend got the brisket sandwich and we died right there. The meat was so tender and flavorful and the ends being lightly charred gave the meat that extra traditional barbeque flavor. I honestly totally forgot to take a picture of the food because as soon as I got it, I had to start eating right away. So make sure to check out their social media and website to keep an eye on where the food truck will be because you don’t want to miss it.

The event wouldn’t have been complete without live entertainment. I’m always a little iffy on local bands. They’re very hit or miss and in my experience, more miss than hit. However, Highway 31 provided the perfect type of music for this event! They played some originals which were really delightful but they also did covers of hits from the 90’s and 70’s and they really got the crowd engaged. My favorite thing from this event though, was the bass player from Highway 31, he looked exactly like Kevin Nealon and gave off big Doug from Weeds vibes and I loved it!

In all, I had a really great time and I’m very happy I went and I didn’t convince myself not to go. I’m really looking forward to more events like this but the next one is the Dallas Margarita and Taco Festival in November so make sure to stay tuned for more great Dallas finds and check out the social media links below for all the aforementioned businesses and for Highway 31!

Big Dash Ice Cream and Pastries

Pictured L-R: Arabic Ice Cream with Pistachios, Salted Caramel or Lotus, Mint and Lemon

Have you ever had stretchy ice cream? Can you even begin to imagine what stretchy ice cream is? Well I can tell you one thing, it’s heaven and the folks at Big Dash have perfected it!

Located in a small business center area in Richardson, TX this quaint shop is run by a husband and wife duo so you can feel good about buying here since you’re supporting a local small business. There’s always people in this shop which is a testament to how delicious their desserts are and their hospitality rivals even the best of southern hospitality. The first thing that happens when you walk in and approach the counter, you’re handed a sample of the Arabic ice cream topped with pistachios and if you’ve never had Arabic ice cream, you have not lived.

It has a deep creamy texture like frozen custard but it’s chewy and stretchy, like you’re eating a mouthful of Big League Bubblegum. When you eat the Arabic ice cream, you taste the cream and maybe a little cinnamon or cardamom? I’m not entirely sure but it’s absolutely delectable and the pistachios on top add a beautiful touch of texture and little salt to the sweetness.

The flavor options don’t stop there! You can ask for as many samples of flavors as you want and I highly suggest you try some of the more exotic flavors like Mint and Lemon which is more a sherbert but perfect on a hot day or the Lotus flavor which has a sweet and earthy flavor but is one of the stretchy flavors. All of the flavors are incredible and you won’t be disappointed with whatever one you get and don’t worry, there’s flavors for the little ones too! If you bring your kids here, they’ll love the Bubblegum flavor. I know this because I do! It’s so creamy with the flavor of bubblegum all throughout and the amazing chewy texture makes it even better.

The best thing to do once you decide what flavor you want, check and see if you can get it alongside some fresh and warm crepes. Oh, did I forget to mention they have crepes? Well they do and they’re incredible and I’m starting to think that there’s nothing Big Dash can’t do that isn’t amazing.

Speaking of amazing, if you’re adventerous or decide you love this place as much as I do, then you MUST try the Kinafa. It’s a melty, sweet and cheesy middle-eastern dessert and it’s to die for. You must be thinking, “A dessert made out of melted cheese?” YES! I promise you won’t regret trying it.

Have an anniversary or birthday coming up? Big Dash has you covered with handmade, beautiful and delicious baklava. Of course they have baklava and I’m so thankful for it! Baklava is for sure one of my weaknesses and Big Dash takes full advantage of that chink in my armor! Anytime I go there I can’t leave without buying a box but if I couldn’t make it there, they deliver …. and they cater.

So, what can’t Big Dash do? Apparently nothing! Their ice cream is incredible and versatile so everyone will enjoy it, their crepes are heavenly, the baklava is to die for, they cater AND they deliver!

Well, what are you waiting for? If you’re in the Dallas area got get you some Big Dash and drop a comment and tell me what you think! If you want to see more, head over to to see more photos!
